Martha received Jesus as a guest into her home. The bible states that Martha was distracted with serving and the work that needed to be done. While Martha was working, her sister Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet, listening to His words and teachings.
Martha became resentful of Mary for not helping and complained to the Lord. She even asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her.
Jesus responded: “Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful, and Mary hath chosen the good part, and that shall not be taken away from her.”
I don’t think that Martha was a bad person. She was probably just overworked and stressed out. She let her resentments for Mary cloud her judgment. She focused on the wrong things- which is a tactic used by the enemy. How could Martha hear the Savior’s message when her heart was so full of anger? It seems that she was so upset with Mary that she couldn’t even see what she was missing.
When we are blinded by anger and resentment, we are unable to fully focus on the Savior and His teachings. Our hearts are just not in the right place to receive it- even if it is right in front of us.
When hurtful situations arise, we must choose to focus on Jesus- not for a reprimand for the other person(as Martha sought), but for our peace and comfort. We must seek Him for guidance through difficulties, and
for an increased ability to forgive.
He is the best choice.
